Volunteering is an activity undertaken on a person’s own initiative, through which they offer their time, skills, and energy to support others without financial compensation. Expenses incurred for the project in which the person is involved may be reimbursed.

Principles of volunteering

Four defining principles underpin volunteering and distinguish it from similar activities, such as internships:

  1. The activity is carried out for the benefit of the community or the public.
  2. The activity is unpaid and does not pursue financial gain, although expenses such as transport or supplies may be reimbursed.
  3. Participation is voluntary and free from coercion.
  4. The activity generally takes place in an organized setting, coordinated by an organization or an initiative group.

What the volunteering experience can offer

Depending on the role and the activities carried out, volunteering can provide opportunities to practise collaboration, organization, and communication, meet people, and contribute to the community. These outcomes vary from one project to another and are not guaranteed.

Possible ways to get involved

Depending on the project and the available resources, involvement may include:

  • support for community or educational activities;
  • collaboration within a team;
  • organizational tasks agreed with the person responsible.
